As a longtime professor of communication at Northwest University, it is an honor to exhibit my collage artworks at the Hurst Gallery. My creative process explores existential questions through surreal juxtapositions of familiar imagery, inviting open-ended interpretations.
I repurpose past art history into new contexts, allowing fresh meanings to emerge. “And I Think to Myself” embeds an ancient Greek statue into Hans Hoffman-inspired color blocks, merging antiquity with modern aesthetics. “The Way You Look Tonight” places the Three Graces amidst song lyrics, fusing classical beauty with pop culture.
My religious references also intend to spur introspection. "Opening the Fifth Seal" imagines a passage from Revelation, while “Prophecies of Love” references Christ's crucifixion and resurrection. While potentially obscure, these tableaux encourage you to find personal relevance. My goal is to create space for the viewer’s unique vision.
Additional works such as “Fortunate Son,” “Time of Your Life,” “Go Rest High on that Mountain,” and “Rockin’ Pneumonia & the Boogie Woogie Flu” draw new connections between Old Master sketches, classical figures, theology, and modern music. Historic fine art mingles with today's culture.
These collages combine images in unexpected ways to get us thinking differently about life’s big questions. Art can shake us from entrenched patterns and remind us there are always new perspectives waiting to be discovered within ourselves.
